What is Neuromuscular Therapy?

Neuromuscular Therapy (also known as Trigger Point Therapy) is a massage therapy technique that focuses on:

  1. Identifying trigger points
  2. Resolving them, and
  3. Releasing the affected structures

When we release the structures – which are usually muscles – we do so along their natural range of motion and length.

Trigger points are irritable nodules often found in taut bands of muscle fibers. They can be painful when compressed (latent) or when the affected muscle is in motion or at rest (active).

These trigger points can be the cause of headaches and commonly appear after injuries or as a result of poor posture.

Neuromuscular Therapy is a technique that flushes these taut bands with finger tip pressure and releases the points to decrease pain.


While releasing trigger points it is common to have “referral pain” – this is when a sensation can be felt elsewhere in the body, sometimes described as “traveling”.

A common example of referral pain is when you experience a headache that travels from the base of your skull to your forehead or eye. This is caused when the upper trapezius muscle is fatigued, weak, or too tight due to working out, poor posture or injury. These taut bands develop trigger points: once the neck is stimulated, the trigger points produce referral pains.

Pain is a signal that something is wrong, often resulting in a headache.

Do I have to choose a technique before scheduling an appointment?

Not at all. All you need to do is book an appointment with one of our Registered Massage Therapists. During your session, your RMT will create a tailored plan of various techniques designed around your specific needs.

This is my first massage – what can I expect?

Firstly, good for you! Here are some notes about getting started at Knead.

  • Please fill out your intake form online prior to your appointment time (it will be emailed to you directly).
  • You are welcome to wear relaxed clothing, or come as you are.
  • Enter the clinic a few moments early to check in with reception.
  • After you check in, your RMT will join you shortly to guide you to the treatment room.
  • Your RMT will go over your intake form with you. You will both have time to ask questions and get a clear idea of what will be taking place during your session.
  • You and your RMT will discuss what clothing may need to be removed, and how to get on the table.
  • Each treatment includes an interview/assessment, hands-on treatment, and there may be a few minutes at the end of the session to go over some homecare exercises.

Could these “trigger points” be the reason for my headaches?

Yes! In fact, trigger points may be the little culprits for a number of different conditions, and are found in muscle, tendons, and fascia (the bands or sheets of connective tissue).

Remember, trigger points are usually worked on no matter what: when we find them, we try to remove them.

Can I fill out an intake form before my first appointment?

For sure! It’s not mandatory to fill out the intake form out before your first appointment, but it will save some time. If you have any questions about any of the fields on the form, just leave the area blank and we will go over it in person.
